The Internet of Things (IoT) was once celebrated for a simple promise: connecting everyday objects to the internet so we could see what they were doing. But for years, connected devices suffered from a severe limitation—they could talk and transmit, but they couldn’t think. They flooded centralized cloud servers with terabytes of raw, unstructured data, creating bandwidth bottlenecks, latency issues, and staggering storage costs.

Enter AIoT (Artificial Intelligence of Things): the fusion of artificial intelligence and IoT infrastructure. By embedding machine learning models directly into edge devices or localized gateways, AIoT transforms passive sensors into active, autonomous decision-makers.

1. How AIoT Works: Moving Intelligence to the Edge

Traditional IoT architectures relied heavily on a “collect-and-dump” model: sensors recorded temperature, vibration, or video feeds, piped that data across a network, and waited for a distant cloud server to crunch the numbers and send back a command.

AIoT flips this script by leveraging Edge AI. Using lightweight neural networks and specialized hardware accelerators (like micro-NPUs), modern smart devices process information locally at the point of origin:
